The last known passenger pigeon died Sept. 1, 1914, but her legacy lives on in a new exhibition opening June 18 at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.
Martha, the name of the legendary, now stuffed pigeon, will be on display representing Ohio in the exhibit “From These Lands: Sharing Our Natural and Cultural Heritage,” which commemorates America’s 250th anniversary through more than 600 rare objects and specimens representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories, according to a press release.
