Child no longer intubated, sedated after nearly drowning during DC summer camp

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — After nearly drowning during a soccer summer camp at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) last week, 6-year-old Adonis Jackson is no longer intubated and sedated, according to the child’s attorney.

Jackson’s attorney, Dominique D. Calhoun, said the child “slightly” responded to questions Tuesday while being cared for at Children’s National Hospital in D.C., though his responses have remained limited.

“So, the question that was posed to him at the time, about you [know] feeling okay, did he kind of understand? He’s still a little disoriented, and that’s important to understand,” Calhoun said Wednesday afternoon.

Jackson was pulled from an athletic center pool July 20 while attending a Nike-sponsored soccer camp at UDC, according to campus police.

Documents from police indicate around 30 campers were in the pool at the time of the incident; one camp counselor went into the water to try to rescue Jackson but couldn’t retrieve him. A head coach was then able to get him out of the pool and start administering CPR until first responders arrived…
