13-Year-Old Accused of Driving Stolen Kia in Maryland Crash That Killed Virginia Father and Injured 7 Teens

A stolen car, seven young passengers, and one deadly intersection created a heartbreaking chain of events in Maryland after police say a 13-year-old was behind the wheel of a Kia that crashed into another vehicle, killing a 58-year-old driver and sending seven juveniles to hospitals.

A quiet Tuesday morning in Germantown, Maryland, became the scene of a devastating emergency response after a two-vehicle collision left one person dead and seven children injured. The crash happened at approximately 5:25 a.m. on Aug. 4 at the intersection of Great Seneca Highway and Clopper Road, involving a Toyota Matrix and a Kia Optima that police say had been stolen.

Authorities said the Kia was carrying seven juveniles between the ages of 12 and 15, while 58-year-old William Vance Payne II of Virginia drove the Toyota. Payne was pronounced dead at the scene, while the children inside the Kia were transported to area hospitals with injuries ranging from serious to critical.
