DCA gets new radar aimed at improving runway safety

WASHINGTON (7News) — A new radar system is now in place at Reagan National Airport, part of a broader push to improve safety and modernize air traffic control technology.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced Friday that DCA has received a new Surface Movement Radar, known as SMR-4.

The system gives air traffic controllers a clearer view of aircraft and vehicles moving along runways and taxiways, including during bad weather and low visibility. The goal is to help controllers prevent runway incursions and improve safety on the ground…
