WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Two people and 12 cats are without a home after a Wednesday apartment fire in Northeast D.C., according to the DC Fire and EMS Department (DCFEMS).
In a post to Xat 3:24 p.m., firefighters said crews were called to reports of a fire and heavy smoke coming from a building in the 2000 Block of 4th Street NE.

There, smoke billowed from the front door of the four-story apartment building, with flames originating from a first-floor unit.
Firefighters said the fire was extinguished before it spread to any additional units, and all of the cats were rescued.
Firefighters said one man was evaluated but refused to go to the hospital, and no other injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation…
