Fourth of July storms and dangerous heat could disrupt holiday plans across South Florida

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — South Florida’s Independence Day forecast includes a familiar summer combination of dangerous heat and widespread afternoon thunderstorms that could interrupt outdoor celebrations.

Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon as sea breezes, which are winds moving inland from the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, collide across the region. The highest storm coverage is expected over interior South Florida, although storms could develop almost anywhere during the afternoon and early evening.

The main threats will be frequent lightning, heavy downpours, and wind gusts up to 45 mph. Storms are expected to move slowly, allowing heavy rain to fall over the same areas for an extended period. That could lead to localized flooding, especially in urban neighborhoods and places with poor drainage…
