State won’t seek death penalty for suspect in Riviera Beach mass shooting

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — Palm Beach County prosecutors will not seek the death penalty against the man accused in the Riviera Beach shooting spree that left two people dead and several others hurt, according to a new court filing in the case. In a notice filed April 24, the State Attorney’s Office formally told the court it is not pursuing capital punishment against Tramonte Terrell Gibson.

Gibson was indicted earlier this month on multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree murder with a firearm and three counts of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, in connection with the March 16 violence at the Azure Estates apartment complex in Riviera Beach. Authorities say the shooting killed Dillion Wright and John Richard Haliburton III and injured several other people before the gunman fled.

Investigators said the gunfire erupted around 6:15 p.m., when Gibson allegedly opened fire on a group gathered outside the complex. Witnesses said Wright was shot in the head at close range, and Haliburton was killed after trying to intervene.
