NAACP demands West Palm Beach freeze $9.5M Salvation Army lease buyout

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — The NAACP West Palm Beach Branch is demanding a halt to the City of West Palm Beach’s plan to spend $9.5 million to buy out The Salvation Army’s long-term lease at 600 North Rosemary Avenue.

The NAACP has raised concerns about the city’s decision-making process, suggesting that plans for a replacement occupant for the property may have been discussed without a public hearing or competitive process, violating the existing 70-year lease.

In a letter addressed to Mayor Keith A. James and city commissioners, NAACP President Alfred Fields Jr. stressed the importance of community involvement in decisions affecting historic neighborhoods. “This land belongs to the people of West Palm Beach,” Fields stated…
