Remembering Udall: Kansas’ deadliest tornado happened 71 years ago Monday

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Monday marks 71 years since the Udall tornado that killed 80 people in Cowley County. This was the deadliest tornado in Kansas’ history and was part of a storm that killed about 100 people in all, as another 20 people died in a tornado that hit Blackwell, Okla., just an hour before the storm hit Sumner and Cowley counties in Kansas.

May 25 and 26, 1955, brought the Great Plains Tornado Outbreak, which included about 50 tornadoes, the strongest and deadliest of which were the F-5 tornadoes in Blackwell and Udall.
