Kansas college pauses golf programs, citing financial challenges

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Citing the need to preserve the “long-term financial stability and competitive strength of the athletic department,” Fort Hays State University announced Monday that its men’s and women’s golf programs are on hiatus.

“Pausing our golf programs was an incredibly difficult decision,” Athletic Director Lisa Goddard McGuirk said in a news release. “The rapidly evolving landscape of college athletics presents financial challenges that require immediate, proactive management. These challenges are not unique to FHSU, but they require that we look critically at our resources.”

The university said the decision came after a comprehensive evaluation of its athletic programs and resource allocation. It cited a recent $2.4 million reduction in state funding as one of the reasons behind the cost-cutting measure.
