WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) — A tornado that struck northern Sedgwick County early Sunday morning lasted about two minutes, traveled less than a quarter-mile and caught many people by surprise, according to Vanessa Pearce, a meteorologist who works in the National Weather Service in Wichita.
The tornado was rated EF-2, with peak wind speeds of 135 mph.
Rick Shale, the storm’s only victim, died when the tornado ripped his double-wide manufactured home from the poured basement foundation that it was bolted on.
