Flooding in Derby’s High Park, surrounding area forces horses to higher ground

DERBY, Kan. (KWCH) – Heavy rain caused flooding in several south-central communities, including Derby, where water approaching the entrance to High Park reached knee height. The flooding near the park prompted handlers to move nearby horses to higher ground, safe from the rushing waters.

Water from an overflowed pond sent debris, including fish, onto the side of the road. Residents who live nearby said they had never seen High Park flood the way it did Friday. Water rushed over the road, and in the park, much of the usually dry ground was underwater.

Tammy Stephenson helped bring her daughter’s horses through the floodwaters. Stephenson said the experience was new for the horse as well as for herself…
