Derby homeowners say city-owned storm drain keeps flooding their property

DERBY, Kan. (KWCH) – After storms last night caused flooding throughout south-central Kansas, the Rippee family in Derby said a flooding storm drain has damaged their home – and it isn’t the first time.

“In 2022, May 2022, there was a storm. There was about four, four and a half inches of rain that came, and this drain backed up, clogged, came into our yard, went into our basement, put five and a half feet of water in our basement,” said Rich Rippee, one of the homeowners.

While the home is mostly protected since they have made changes to it, now, it’s their pool that keeps flooding, putting dirt and silt into the pool with the floodwaters coming in…
