The heat is on repeat! It is amped up today with widespread Heat Advisories and an Extreme Heat Warning through Friday evening. The heat index could reach 110 degrees, or hotter, at times.
High fire danger is outlined for southwest Kansas into the Oklahoma Panhandle through evening.
While a stray shower or storm may try to form over the northwest corner of our viewing area later in the day, we are getting through today dry and extremely hot. The boundary has shuffled to the north and will turn back toward us on Wednesday.
We will cook another day with widespread triple digit temperatures on Wednesday.
A random shower may fester among the Nebraska state line tomorrow, but a better shot for rain and storms will come into play Wednesday evening.
This may skim our area with Nebraska benefiting the most. Some storms may become severe with primarily a damaging wind threat.
Thursday looks a little more promising for showers and storms by evening over parts of the Central Plains.
The area of high pressure or heat dome shifts to the southeast. This keeps Southcentral and Southeast Kansas in the hottest air.
Toward evening, a stronger disturbance will trigger scattered showers and storms over our southwest counties. This will lift around the area of high pressure, producing more scattered rain into central and eventually northern Kansas into Thursday night. This may cut a path around the Wichita Area. It will be close. It just depends on how strong the high is to our southeast and if it will allow some of this rain to spread closer to the ICT. This round will turn into a complex of rain and thunder into Friday morning that will track to the northeast.
Repeated overnight chances for rain will linger into the weekend with western and northern Kansas benefitting the most. Wichita and our southeast counties may struggle to get much moisture over the next week. That said, some of the hottest temperatures late this week and over the weekend will be around the Wichita area. This enables more triple digit days to tally before a slight dip early next week. This “cooldown” looks brief before the heat ramps again by the middle of next week.
