A front is stretching over Kansas today, promoting a stark temperature difference. Wichita is on the significantly hotter side. As the front tracks south, it will work with the heating of the day and push us into our next chance for storms.
Some storms this evening will be severe with damaging 60-80 MPH wind gusts. We had a confirmed 75 MPH wind gust reported at McConnell Air Force Base earlier this afternoon.
Storms will be largely driven by the daytime sun. After sundown, we should see the number of severe storms drop. The focus will be over southern, central and eastern Kansas for storm formation, including in and around the Wichita Metro early tonight. Rainfall could also be locally heavy given the high moisture content of the atmosphere and produce isolated flooding.
The front will keep trucking southeast tonight and becomes diffuse. Rain will still linger over northcentral and northeast Kansas with only a few leftover scraps over the southern half of the state. The front goes back north and temperatures heat up through week’s end.
Chances for rain will shift more north and west.
Thursday looks even drier before a stronger cold front comes into view this weekend. Temperatures over the southern half of the state will keep getting hotter Friday and Saturday. Could a few spots make another run for the century mark? It is possible. The timing of the front and its placement Saturday are important factors. This could cause southcentral Kansas to cook into Saturday afternoon if the front and rain hold off until much later in the day. Scattered showers and storms will develop over much of the region Saturday and into Sunday before exiting by Monday.
Once this stronger front tracks through the area, we should be looking at highs in the 70s and 80s into next week.
