A south Wichita suburban police department plans to reduce its Flock data retention time from 30 days to seven days by the end of the year following community concerns about the program.
Haysville purchased its eight Flock cameras — automated license plate readers used to help find suspects — in 2022. Haysville stores the data for 30 days, but after recent community concerns and pushback about the cameras, the police chief now says the department will reduce the amount of time they hold that data.
“We’re here for public safety, and part of that is addressing people’s concerns when they’re concerned about something like this or concerned about privacy,” Police Chief Jeff Whitfield told The Eagle. “We’re trying to meet in the middle with this thing. We’re just not tearing cameras down, and we’re making sure that we’re still trying to keep our community safe . . . but at the same time, we’re trying to address those concerns on privacy issues also.”…
