Collingdale hopes new EIT leads to property tax relief

Collingdale has become the latest Delaware County municipality to enact an earned income tax EIT). An ordinance outlining the new tax was approved by a unanimous Borough Council vote during its meeting on May 18.

The borough has established an EIT of one percent that will apply to both working residents and nonresidents who work in Collingdale. The tax is effective July 1, and letters informing affected residents and non-residents will be mailed out over the next couple of weeks.

Although the EIT will provide the borough of about 9,000 residents with much needed revenue, the primary objective of the new tax will be to provide property tax relief, according to borough manager Joseph G. Papaleo. Passing the EIT means generating revenue for the borough from non-residents and bridging back home the money paid by Collingdale residents who work in other municipalities with EIT policies already in place…
