SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WECT) – Southport’s Planning Board voted unanimously Thursday to ask the Board of Aldermen to impose a 15-month moratorium on data centers.
The board said it wants more time to develop a zoning framework before any such project could move forward in the city. No data center projects are currently proposed or planned within Southport city limits, the city has said.
“One of the things to have effective and proactive zoning, you have to be prepared for things that you might think will never appear and never come here,” Planning Board Chair Lawrence Ashley said. “But hope is never a good plan. So, what we try to do is be very proactive with the regulations.”…
