Brunswick County moves forward with affordable teacher housing plan

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Brunswick County commissioners approved a 12-acre site for an affordable housing complex designed to help teachers afford to live in the rapidly growing coastal county.

The Board of Education plans to build 24 two-bedroom, two-bath apartments on county-owned property in central Brunswick County. The apartments would rent for about $900 per month, compared to the current average of $1,500 or more for similar units in the area.

“Right now, an apartment rental in Brunswick County is $1,500 plus per month. That’s very difficult for a first-year teacher who is just starting out,” Superintendent Dale Cole said…
