Mobile is assessing its banner program amid a dispute over Pride Month banners and criticism from a local pastor who also serves on the Visit Mobile board.
The discussions about whether Mobile should continue allowing private groups and individuals to display banners promoting events or causes come three years after the city stopped issuing permits for private groups to paint a historic cannon in midtown. That earlier dispute, like the current one, centered on Pride Month displays and opposing reactions.
The latest controversy stems from a request by the Rev. Travis Johnson of Pathway Church. During a sermon broadcast on social media Sunday, Johnson said he approached the city with his own banner request focused on the traditional family.
