When I first heard there was a restaurant that hurled bread rolls across the dining room at customers, I assumed it was a lawsuit waiting to happen. Then I learned that “Home of the Throwed Rolls” isn’t just Lambert’s Cafe’s tagline—it’s one of the many reasons diners keep coming back.
Friends and family kept insisting I stop by, promising the airborne rolls weren’t just a gimmick, but genuinely worth the trip. They were right. With three locations (two in Southern Missouri and one in Alabama), the beloved chain serves up hot, fluffy rolls alongside comfort-food favorites like fried catfish, hog jowl, frog legs, chicken and dumplings, and sausage with kraut. Plus, there’s a gift shop where you can stock up on souvenirs before heading home.
The Day The First Roll Was Tossed
Some moments change the course of food history: the invention of the chocolate chip cookie, the accidental creation of the potato chip, or the first Buffalo wing. Others begin with something much smaller—an offhand comment during a busy lunch rush at the original location in Sikeston, Missouri.
“The tradition of throwing rolls started on May 26, 1976,” explained Mike Church, general manager of Lambert’s Cafe. “Norman Lambert, the owner at the time, was walking around asking customers if they would like a roll. It was a busy, crowded day, and one customer said, ‘Just throw the dang thing!’ Norman did just that, and everyone else joined in. Lambert’s has been throwing rolls ever since.”
