Today in History – July 4: City of Omaha founded

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Omaha’s founding dates to this day in 1854, according to the National Park Service.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 created the Nebraska Territory, drawing thousands of people to the new land. Many of Omaha’s first residents came from Council Bluffs and marked the occasion with a picnic.

Omaha currently has an estimated population of just under 500,000 residents. Approximately one million people live in the metro area.
