Omaha college student loses nearly $5K in online job scam involving fake check

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A college honors student hoped to get a jump on his career. Instead, he learned a lesson about job offers online.

Serin Anderson, a business major, responded to a work-from-home data entry job posting paying $25 an hour.

“Here’s my foot in the door, there’s some nice experience I can put on my resume,” Anderson said.

How the scam worked

Anderson received a check for nearly $5,000 from what appeared to be a legitimate Alabama company — one he now believes may have been stolen, washed and forged. The alleged scammers instructed him to deposit the check and pay for home data processing equipment through Cash App…
