Baton Rouge schools adjusting rules for marijuana, deepfakes, cyber-harassing of teachers

Principals at Baton Rouge public schools no longer would have to expel students the first time they are caught with marijuana, but other illegal drugs in the hands of students would still lead to automatic expulsion, according to proposed new rules.

The East Baton Rouge Parish school system has proposed a set of changes to its student handbook. The School Board has given preliminary approval to the suggested updates, and a final vote is set for July 23.

Students can already be disciplined for cyberbullying their peers. Under the reworked “Student Rights & Responsibilities and Discipline Policy Handbook,” they would now get in trouble if they are caught harassing a teacher online, even if the students are doing so off school property, according to another proposal…
