PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A $1 million rent relief fund that’s supposed to help Providence residents keep their housing in a pinch is still in the hands of the City Council.
The rent relief program was announced by Mayor Brett Smiley back in March as an alternative to rent control. The measure was approved in the city budget, which took effect on July 1, but the ordinance still needs the City Council’s approval.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley didn’t mince words on Tuesday as he called on the council to approve the program before they break for August recess this week.
