Barry County Fair moves beyond downtown Hastings

For nearly a century and a half, the Barry County Fair reflected both the agricultural character of the county and the changing habits of the people who attended it. What began as a conveniently located community gathering near downtown Hastings eventu­ally grew into an event requiring more barns, parking, camping space and room than the original grounds could provide.

The Barry County Fair was officially established in 1852. An 1873 map of Hastings identifies the fair­grounds along West State Street near South Market Street, only a few blocks west of the Barry County Courthouse. From 1858 through 1989, generations of Barry County residents made their way to that familiar location.

Its nearness to downtown was one of the fairgrounds’ greatest advantages. Many visitors could walk to the fair, while others arrived by horse and wagon, car­riage, automobile or farm truck. Downtown businesses benefited from the crowds, and fair week became part of the annual rhythm of life in Hastings. The fair was not merely an agricultural exhibition, but a communi­ty homecoming where neighbors met, young people competed and old friendships were renewed.

The format of fair-going was shaped by the modest size of the grounds and the rural life of the county. Livestock, produce, household goods and farm equip­ment were displayed close together. Horse racing and grandstand entertainment drew large audiences, while carnival rides, midway games and food concessions gradually became more prominent…
