Amsterdam woman used fake passport cards to commit bank fraud

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — An Amsterdam woman could spend decades in prison after pleading guilty to attempted bank fraud. Officials said her crimes took place for several months in 2022 and 2023.

Nikki Vancuren, 51, admitted to using fake passport cards to withdraw or attempt to withdraw money from others’ accounts at banks in New York. In one instance in January 2023, Vancuren showed a passport card with identifying information for a real person, but it had her picture. She used it to try and withdraw $4,000 from an NBT bank in Johnson City.

“By repeatedly using fraudulent passport cards to access bank accounts that did not belong to her, this defendant attacked the integrity of our financial system and put innocent account holders at risk,” HSI Acting Special Agent in Charge Anthony Patrone said. “These crimes erode community trust and financial stability, and HSI remains firmly committed to uncovering, disrupting, and bringing to justice individuals involved in fraud wherever we find it.”

Vancuren is scheduled to be sentenced on November 4. She faces up to 30 years in prison, a fine of up to $1 million, and a term of supervised release of up to five years…
