Homeless communities brace for impact as they combat the heat and air quality crisis

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — As the smoke from Canadian wildfires lingers into the weekend, air quality across upstate New York is still raising concerns, especially for sensitive groups.

Sister Grace’s homeless shelter has already distributed 300 masks and are still in need of more and Mercedes Vazquez-Simmons and her team of volunteers have been working around the clock.

“We have to be prepared,” Vazquez-Simmons, La Madonna Della Strada president, said. “It’s one thing that Sister Grace said is, always be prepared for any emergency.”…
