Everglades wildfire spreads across 4,400 acres into 2 counties

A rapidly growing wildfire in the Florida Everglades is creating smoky conditions across parts of South Florida after burning thousands of acres in western Broward County, prompting firefighters to continue containment efforts while environmental experts warn that unusually dry conditions are increasing the region’s wildfire risk.

The blaze, identified as the Mile Marker 40 fire, developed west of U.S. 27 and north of Interstate 75. While no homes or buildings are currently in danger, smoke has spread into nearby communities, affecting residents and travelers moving through the area.

Officials continue monitoring the fire as weather conditions and ongoing drought create favorable conditions for additional wildfire activity throughout the Everglades.
