Inmate charged with killing his cellmate at Macomb Correctional Facility

A 50-year-old Macomb Correctional Facility inmate has been charged with the killing of his cellmate, who was a convicted child sex offender, prosecutors said Monday.

Aaron Samir Akel of Dearborn Heights was arraigned of first-degree homicide charges in 42-2 District Court in New Baltimore. Magistrate Genevieve L. Taylor bond at $500,000 cash or surety only.

County prosecutors say Akel allegedly strangled his 73-year-old cellmate, Daniel Hosmer, before stabbing him in one eye and impaling him through the other eye with a broken broomstick handle in the early-morning hours of April 22 in the Lenox Township state prison…
