BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – We have declared today and Tuesday (July 27-28, 2026) as First Alert Weather Days for dangerous heat levels. A heat advisory has been issued for all of central Alabama through Tuesday until 9 p.m. CDT. The combination of hot temperatures and very humid conditions will make the heat index climb between 105°F-110°F. Just remember that if you have to work outside in this heat, that you remain hydrated at all times. Take several breaks and wear light and loose-fitting clothes.
We want to give you a first alert for the potential to see showers and storms this morning. We have been monitoring a couple of storm complexes diving in from Tennessee. Storms will continue to push to the south into central Alabama capable of producing heavy rain, strong wind gusts, frequent lightning, and small hail. Strong and severe storms cannot be ruled out. Storms were severe in parts of Marion, Winston, and Fayette counties shortly before 6 a.m. CDT. The main threat is damaging winds up to 60 mph.
We may have cloudy conditions through the late morning and early afternoon hours once the storms move through, but sunshine should sneak through the clouds allowing temperatures to warm into the low to mid 90s. It will be hotter in west Alabama this afternoon as temperatures warm into the mid 90s with a heat index between 105°F-110°F. East Alabama will likely see highs in the lower 90s with a heat index approaching 105°F.
Dangerous heat continues Tuesday: Tuesday is another First Alert Weather Day for dangerous heat levels. It looks like tomorrow will be our hottest day of the week with afternoon highs in the mid and upper 90s. Heat index values will likely approach 105°F-110°F. Rain chances remain isolated tomorrow, so most of us will remain hot and dry with a partly cloudy sky. Limit your time outdoors and stay hydrated! Make sure monitor your pets and keep them safe from the heat too!
Next Big Thing: It looks like a weak cold front will move through central Alabama Wednesday. It will help to produce widely scattered showers and storms across our area. The greatest chance to see rain may occur south and west of Birmingham. Slightly drier air will begin to move into central Alabama Wednesday, so the heat index may remain below 105°F. Any storm that develops Wednesday could become strong producing heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and frequent lightning. Afternoon temperatures will likely trend closer to average for late July with highs in the lower 90s. With slightly drier air moving into Alabama, we could experience comfortable mornings with temperatures cooling into the upper 60s Friday morning. We will likely remain mostly dry and sunny Thursday and Friday with highs in the lower 90s.
