Mexican restaurant El Sazon will close in Minneapolis

El Sazón Cocina & Tragos on Lyndale Avenue in south Minneapolis will close its doors on Aug. 15, the company announced on Thursday.

“Today is one of the hardest announcements we’ve ever had to make,” reads an announcement from co-owners Cristian and Karen De León. “After many sleepless nights and difficult conversations, we’ve made the decision to close El Sazón Cocina & Tragos.”

The restaurant was a 2023 expansion of the owners’ original concept, the Eagan-based El Sazón Tacos and More, which opened in 2022, serving fresh takes on Mayan cuisine inside a BP gas station. That location remains open.

The group will also continue to operate its counter at Eat Street Crossing in Minneapolis and its most recently opened outpost, Xelas by El Sazón. The latter opened in 2025 and offers modern turns on traditional Guatemalan dishes in Stillwater…
