Jury finds man guilty of second-degree murder in 2024 Mount Trashmore shooting

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A jury found Markal Cook guilty of second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection to the shooting death of Jeyani Upshur, 15, outside the Mount Trashmore carnival more than two years ago.

The jury took about three hours to reach its verdict.

Upshur died after she was shot once in the back of her neck in May 2024, with the bullet passing through her carotid artery and jugular vein, according to testimony from forensic pathologist Dr. Wendy Gunther.
