A new law banning cell phones goes into effect for students returning to school in Muscogee County Monday August 3, 2026. The b ell-to-bell ban preventing student use of cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, and headphones from the morning bell until dismissal was signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp in May. Exceptions are permitted for students who require a device under an Individualized Education Program (IEP), Section 504 Plan, or specific medical plan.
The personal electronics ban which had bipartisan support from lawmakers was enacted to help keep students focused on teaching and learning without distractions during the school day. Unauthorized use or failure to turn over a device when requested by staff leads to confiscation, parent-pickup requirements, and potential disciplinary consequences aligned with the student code of conduct.
Penalties for violating the new law include written warnings for the first offense and in school suspension and out of school suspension for second and third offenses.
