John Dial is running for the District 4 seat on the Martin County Commission. A Navy veteran, Dial spent 27 years working in the yachting industry, earning his captain’s license and later his yacht broker’s license, and has worked for a range of private clients before starting several marine businesses of his own, including a boating safety training company and a yacht dealership. He currently serves as brand manager for a boat builder based in Stuart.
From the Boating Industry to a County Commission Race
Dial said his interest in local government began several years ago after speaking out at a Martin County Commission meeting over a development decision he opposed. He said he later donated roughly five and a half acres of land near Maggy’s Hammock Park to the county rather than developing it himself.
Dial said he decided to enter this year’s race after a phone conversation with his opponent, whom he declined to name during the interview. According to Dial, when he told her he was considering running, she asked him not to, and when he asked her reasoning for wanting to continue serving, she told him she wanted to build her legacy. Dial said he separately understood, based on conversations with others close to her, that she hoped to become the longest-serving commissioner in Martin County history.
