MARLBOROUGH – David Doucette, a Marlborough city councilor, recently penned a letter arguing that Marlborough should work towards having a municipal thermal utility. The City Council on July 20 unanimously agreed to place the letter on file, with Doucette asking his colleagues to co-sign.
According to Doucette, Marlborough should “develop more locally sourced renewable energy, such as geothermal and thermal exchange networks.” This way, he says, the city could cut down on its fossil fuel usage – and the controversy surrounding non-renewable energy sources.
“[Oil] prices are spiraling out of control due to global demand, while fossil fuels come from volatile regions of the world. Our dependence on these fuels is a danger to our modern civilization and the environment. Our nation’s demand for fossil fuels justifies the wars being fought over them, while the extraction of fossil fuels continues to disregard human rights and cause environmental damage around the world,” Doucette wrote. “Switching to neighborhood energy reduces our dependence on fossil fuels by replacing them with locally sourced alternatives.”…
