A 40-year-old Chinese restaurant staple in Oakland has closed

An Oakland restaurant that served Chinese dishes since 1986 is now closed.

The lights are off at Ben’s, at 398 Third St. in the Jack London warehouse district, and its shoebox-sized interior is littered with construction materials and cleaning supplies. Its chairs, on which area workers would normally enjoy a quick and affordable meal, are stacked over tables. A note taped to the door thanks customers for a “great 40 years” of support.
