1965 — Titan II missile-silo fire kills 53 workers near Searcy. The August 9 fire occurred in 1965 at Titan II Launch Complex 373-4, about 11 miles north of Searcy in White County. A fire erupted inside the underground missile silo while civilian contractors were reinforcing the complex as part of a Cold War improvement program. Fifty-three workers died, primarily from smoke inhalation, and only two men working inside the silo survived. The nuclear warhead had been removed, although the Titan II missile remained fueled. Investigators attributed the fire to hydraulic fluid ignited during maintenance work, with poor lighting, ventilation and escape routes contributing to the heavy loss of life. The disaster remains the largest loss of life at a United States nuclear-weapons facility.
1864 — Union and Confederate troops skirmish at Hatch’s Ferry, On the afternoon of August 9, 1864, a detachment of the Third Michigan Cavalry encountered about 300 Confederate soldiers at Hatch’s Ferry on the White River, roughly four miles upriver from Augusta. The engagement occurred during a Federal expedition against Confederate Brigadier General Joseph O. Shelby’s forces. Few details and no casualties were recorded, but the Union cavalry secured the only available flatboat and learned that Shelby’s command was camped across the river north of Augusta…
