GERMANTOWN, Md. — Shaken by the death of William “Vance” Payne, loved ones gathered for a candlelight vigil Sunday, overwhelmed by grief.
“Having to come back under these conditions is terrible,” said Angela Klinkhammer, Payne’s sister, who, after the vigil, visited the intersection where he was killed. “But I wanted to make sure I came and visited the place where he took his last breath and just know he was so loved.”
A deadly collision
Payne was killed on Tuesday, Aug. 4, when investigators say the Toyota Matrix Payne was driving was struck by another vehicle. The other vehicle included seven children between the ages of 12 and 15.
First responders were first called to the area for a report of a collision with one vehicle overturned just after 5:30 a.m., according to the fire department. When they arrived, rescue crews found people trapped inside the two cars…
