A long-drained Fayetteville dam gets a second look

The Fayetteville City Council approved a $1.65 million contract for the design and permitting phase of the College Lake dam retrofit project, in an effort to bring the high-hazard dam into compliance with state safety requirements.

College Lake dam, located in the College Lakes neighborhood near the King’s Grant in north Fayetteville, is an earthen embankment dam — a dam constructed of layers of natural earth material, such as soil, to hold back water. The dam is about 565 feet long and 20 feet high and is considered a high-hazard dam by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Dam Safety Inventory.

A high-hazard dam doesn’t mean it’s at risk of failure, but rather that if it does fail it could result in loss of life or major property damage, the NCDEQ website states…
