Man accused in 2023 ambush-style killing of deputy goes on trial

A jury on Monday will begin hearing opening statements in the trial of a man accused of fatally shooting a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy nearly three years ago.

Kevin Salazar, now 32, has allegedly confessed to what authorities described as an “ambush-style” shooting that killed Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer on Sept. 16, 2023, outside the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station.

The 4th-generation deputy was 30 years old and had gotten engaged just four days prior to his death. He was on duty when he was found shot and unconscious in his patrol car by a citizen.

Salazar’s family spoke to reporters shortly after he was arrested outside their Palmdale home two days after the shooting and said he suffered from serious mental health issues…
