COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Attorneys for Alex Murdaugh are asking a judge to move his upcoming double murder retrial to Richland County after previously proposing Charleston County as the new venue.
The request comes after Circuit Court Judge Debra McCaslin agreed last week to move the retrial out of Colleton County, where Murdaugh was convicted in 2023 of murdering his wife, Margaret, and son, Paul. The judge has not yet decided where the retrial will be held.

In a letter filed Monday, Murdaugh’s defense team said Richland County would provide a large enough jury pool to help seat an impartial jury while also reducing costs associated with the venue change.
Defense attorney Richard Harpootlian wrote that Richland County’s potential jury pool is comparable in size to Charleston County and would offer “a much greater opportunity to find an impartial jury.”…
