CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — A man was sentenced to three years in prison following a boat collision that left one person dead.
Nicholas Francesco Zuccala Jr. pleaded guilty to reckless homicide by operation of a boat.
Officers with the North Charleston Police Department Marine Unit were at the Riverfront Revival Concert on the Cooper River when they received a distress call just after 7:30 p.m. regarding an accident on Oct. 8, 2022. The distress call indicated that multiple people were ejected into the water after a vessel struck a dredge vessel “Savannah” as it left the concert.
Upon arrival, officers saw the twin-engine boat still afloat with its engines running as it made tight, uncontrolled circles with its music playing. Marine Unit officers located a victim, Macy Sweatman, in the water 75 yards from the scene of the collision. She was not breathing and appeared to have suffered head trauma from the crash.
