Jury fails to reach unanimous verdict in East Lansing manslaughter trial

LANSING — A trial for a man charged in connection with the death of Caleb Shermoe of Fowlerville last year outside an East Lansing restaurant has ended in a mistrial.

David Gaines Jr., 25, who punched Shermoe, 21, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement, was charged with involuntary manslaughter. A jury in Ingham County Circuit Court deliberated for about 17 hours over three days but couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict on his guilt or innocence. Judge Morgan Cole declared it hung on the afternoon of Aug. 20.
