Southern University School of Nursing holds first-ever white coat ceremony honoring nurse practitioners

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The Southern University School of Nursing (SUSON) celebrated its first-ever white coat ceremony for nurse practitioner students on Wednesday, Aug. 19.

According to SUSON, the inaugural event honored future Family Nurse Practitioners of its fall 2026 and spring 2027 graduating cohorts.

Nearly 50% of African American nurse practitioners living in Louisiana have graduated from Southern’s nursing school.
