Breakup, Drinking Bender Spark 3-Hour Lyndhurst Bridge Standoff: Police

A standoff over the Passaic River in Lyndhurst ended peacefully after nearly three hours on Saturday morning, Aug. 22, police said.

A man known to police was intoxicated and belligerent after a breakup and had gone on a drinking bender, Lyndhurst Deputy Police Chief Paul Haggerty said. The man positioned himself on the bridge near the train tracks at Riverside and Lake avenues in Lyndhurst, and refused to get off, Haggerty said.
