Southern Maryland and Eastern Shore Get Doused With Up to 4 Inches of Rain Saturday as Localized Flooding Hits St Michaels and Easton

CHESAPEAKE BEACH, MARYLAND — Heavy rain moved through Southern Maryland and the Eastern Shore on Saturday morning, August 22, dropping as much as 2 to 4 inches in some spots and triggering localized flooding, even as the immediate Washington, D.C. area stayed largely dry.

Radar Shows Heavy Rain Band

Radar imagery from 11:41 AM shows an intense band of rain stretching from Golden Beach and Huntingtown through Chesapeake Beach, Tilghman Island, and St. Michaels, with red and orange returns indicating the heaviest rainfall rates across the corridor.

The rain band extends further northeast toward Easton, Oxford, and Romancoke, with the core of the heaviest activity tracking from southwest to northeast.

Localized Flooding Reported

The combination of heavy rainfall rates and totals reaching 2 to 4 inches has led to localized flooding across parts of Southern Maryland and the Eastern Shore, affecting communities in the path of the slow-moving rain band.

Rain Pulling Away Over Next Few Hours

Forecasters say the rain should continue to pull away from southwest to northeast over the next few hours, gradually easing conditions across Southern Maryland and the Eastern Shore as the system moves offshore.

Different Story Around DC

While Southern Maryland dealt with heavy rain, the immediate Washington, D.C. area saw a much quieter Saturday, with the rain having long exited the region. Cloudy skies and comfortable temperatures in the 70s defined the afternoon around the District.

More Storms Possible Tonight

The break in DC-area activity is not expected to last through the day. More showers and storms are considered likely tonight after dark, meaning the quieter afternoon conditions could give way to renewed wet weather overnight.

What Residents Should Do

Residents across Southern Maryland and the Eastern Shore, including Chesapeake Beach, St. Michaels, and Easton, should continue to watch for standing water on roadways as the heavy rain clears the area over the coming hours.

Those in the DC metro area should prepare for a return of showers and storms after dark tonight, following what has otherwise been a mild, cloudy Saturday…
