Building Bigger, Playing Better: The Winners of Oregon State’s Fall Camp
Fall camp doesn’t hand out trophies, but three weeks in, it’s plenty clear who’s building momentum heading into the September 5 opener at Houston — and it’s not just the guys on the field. From transfers already being talked about like foundational pieces, to a returning starter whose comeback is a story in itself, to the strength coach reshaping bodies across the roster, here are the biggest winners of Oregon State’s fall camp so far.
AJ Newberry
AJ Newberry, RB
Newberry arrived in Corvallis with SEC pedigree, and he’s already validating the hype. The senior running back was named to the Doak Walker Award preseason watch list this week, and offensive coordinator Mitch Dahlen hasn’t been shy about what he thinks he brings to a crowded backfield.
“He’s just different,” Dahlen said. “He’s about the most unique skill-set guy we’ve had at that position in a while. He’s just a true weapon.” Dahlen also pointed to real growth in pass protection through camp, saying Newberry has “done a really good job of just taking the air out of blocks” now that fall camp doesn’t allow cut blocking. Between the watchlist nod and the coach-speak, Newberry looks like one of the most productive additions on either side of the ball.
