Tree knocks out power to thousands in Royal Pines community

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — After a large tree fell onto a power line in south Asheville in the afternoon hours of Aug. 24 and knocked out power to over 2,000 customers, a new technology restored power to most.

According to Zach Vavricka of Duke Energy, that feature is called Self-healing Technology. When the tree fell onto the power line, Duke’s Self-healing Technology automatically rerouted power and restored service to most customers impacted by the outage.

The original number of those without power was over 2,000. Vavricka said that after power was rerouted, 431 customers remained without power…
