Flooding rains possible for portions of the tri-state area

NEW YORK (PIX11) — A period of heavy rainfall is possible for Thursday and Thursday night, according to the National Weather Service.

A low-pressure system and cold front will move through the area, which may cause local flooding, especially over poor drainage areas.

According to forecasters, precipitation is expected to be heaviest over northwest New Jersey and the lower Hudson Valley, where up to 3 inches of rain is possible.

Other areas may experience rainfall rates of two to three inches per hour, along with locally heavier rates.

Forecasters say strong to severe thunderstorms are also possible, with damaging winds of 60 miles per hour or higher in spots.
